Derek Nelson

Mr. Nelson received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics from the University of Utah. He has applied his skills over the last 20 years in design, project management, fabrication, field engineering and on-site construction of projects both domestically and internationally. He is experienced in managing individual projects valued in excess of $20 million.

With extensive training beyond his college experience, Mr. Nelson has also obtained the following certifications:

  • WesTech Certified Weld, Shop Inspector, Fabrication, Paint
  • Mine Health and Safety Administration Level 1 Certified
  • Level II Visual Weld Inspector SNT-TC-1A
  • Professional Project Management
  • Wind and Seismic Calculation (Utah)

Mr. Nelson’s career has included experience in the residential, commercial and heavy industrial sectors of engineering and construction. In addition to his leadership skills and successful project management, he is a qualified heavy industrial/commercial inspector and certified welding inspector and maintains his Utah General Contractor’s license (B100).

In his spare time, Mr. Nelson enjoys the abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation in the state of Utah. You’ll find him fly fishing, skiing, or mountain biking – activities that require a high level of attention to detail balanced with a certain level of aggressiveness. These traits can be seen in his work as a project manager and engineer and make Mr. Nelson a valuable part of the Epic team.
